007 returns to Iceland
James Bond has returned to Iceland, as scenes for the 20th Bond movie are now being filmed in the south east of Iceland, on a glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón. EON productions selected Iceland, since winter landscapes were needed for the film.
Staff of 250 people, including about 70 Icelanders, are working on the ice. The cost in Iceland is estimated 3 million USD. The production does qualify under the 12 % refund scheme offered by the Icelandic government of all film and TV production taking place in Iceland.
This new Bond movie, starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry, will be called Die Another Day and is due to be released in November. Jökulsárlón seems to be a popular location for filming, since scenes for the film Tomb Raider were also filmed there last year. "This lagoon is quite fantastic, so unique. Standing here looking out at the icebergs they look amazing but when you get out on the ice you realise the scale of them, they're like three stories high and the wind sculpts them perfectly, they look amazing." (Iceland unit manager, Chris Brock.)
